I understand how my husband feels about it he has had trust issues with his family. His mom put credit cards in his name and ruined his credit. We have been married for 3 years, and I have never done anything to make him think I would f**** him over. I have always worked and saved every paycheck and put it in our savings. I have never spent alot of are money. The problem is my husband is over seas, he is the army and I have to go file our taxes, well they needed pwer of att. I told him and he was like I don%26#039;t care who you are Im not giving that too you. He said that he knows I am not going to do anything, but if we did get divoreced I could take everything from him. The reason why I am so upset is because I have been a good wife to him. I never worry about him f***** me over. It makes me feel like he doesn%26#039;t trust me. I wouldn%26#039;t ever do anything like that to him because all i care about is my daughter. I have my own good credit, I don%26#039;t need anything for him.
My husband won%26#039;t give me power of attorney? Need advice?
First he can sign a power of attorney JUST for filing taxes purposes and JUST for whatever time he wants even for just hours. He can cancel at anytime. He does not have to grant you everything.
Second let him know that he is an ignorant for not knowing this and not trusting you..... I would be so upset if my man said this to me. Then why is he married to you.

If you don%26#039;t need anything from him, why do you NEED power of attorney?

keep in mind, his own mom betrayed him. i can%26#039;t even imagine what kind of trust issues that would give me! if my mom had screwed me over, i wouldn%26#039;t trust anyone either! sorry but if i had been in his position i don%26#039;t think i%26#039;d do it either! best wishes!

He could do a specific power of attorney, that would allow you to sign his name for taxes and nothing else. A general power or attorney would let you do anything.

Something in his mind. :)
Agree with Zap.

File your own taxes seperately and let him worry about his if he doesn%26#039;t trust you.

Maybe you could file as married filing separately. If he doesn%26#039;t file his own taxes, oh well, his doings.

That%26#039;s what you say now but I imagine if you were to divorce him that you would do your best to screw him over...It is just the way it goes. He is protecting what is his and you cannot blame him. He has been screwed over before. You may mean well right now but if you were to divorce you would change your tune in two seconds and want everything that you could get out of him.

he has major trust issues, you are his wife and he should have given it to you before he left overseas. Does he not understand that you need to file the taxes! i was a navy wife and husband overseas, i don%26#039;t think i ever needed the POA for filing, I don%26#039;t remember needing it . I had it, but they never asked, and as in cashing the check it was desposited into our joint acct. I think i just signed the actual documents. I pulled his w-2 from a military website that he provided me to print out, instead of waiting for the actual w-2 in the mail, cause that could take awhile!

First of all, since your husband is in the military, you can file electronically with Turbo Tax or some other company for free (go to the IRS website for a list).
Secondly, he can file a limited power of attorney for specific purposes or a general power of attorney. Since he%26#039;s overseas, he should have given you at least a limited power of attorney for things like renewing the car registration and so on. The base legal office can provide details. In fact, if your husband got a good pre-travel briefing, they should have explained that (keeping in mind it would be assuming quite a bit to say every briefing is good).
By the way, if he got a good briefing, granting a general power of attorney was probably discouraged. Around 50% of all marriages eventually wind up in divorce, so there%26#039;s certainly no guarantee a spouse will wait for a person stationed overseas.
