About a year ago, my son attended daycare under DSS.
We no longer receive any sort of welfare. We used DSS for exactly what it was meant to do... get yourself together and move on.
My credit report, which I take very good care of, now shows a collections amount of $2,047. According to the school, social services denied payment for the last 3 months that he attended. I was NEVER notified about this, by either the school or DSS.
No one at DSS has been able to help me. I have sent a letter of dispute to the collections agency, but they have already reported it.
I absolutely cannot afford to pay for this. My husband and I work split shifts exactly for that reason. We connot afford daycare!
Any suggestions? What are my rights here?
DSS/Social Services?
Social Serves screw up all the time. One hand doesn%26#039;t no what the other hand is doing. As far as I%26#039;m concerned they never communicate with each other.
They have their own departments that they work on cases assigned to them. Not enough people, too many case loads.
You will have to call and set an appointment with the case worker who worked with you..Everything should be on file. It%26#039;s there job to explain to you why and what for. They may have hooked you up with the wrong case worker.
It%26#039;s always wise to appear person, thus appointment.
You have the %26quot;right%26quot; to dispute your case which they should have send to you through the mail.
Also, check with the Day Care Center%26#039;s Director so he/she can check there records. You should do this by appointment also.
I know this sounds very overwhelming which you already know. There are times when you have to %26quot;fight%26quot; for you rights.
Once this goes into collections there only responsibility is to is get the money. Don%26#039;t let them harass you by calling every other day. If they do, lodge a complaint about harassment. They%26#039;re, by law , not to harass anyone. Especially at your place of employment.
Be prepared with all the paper work you have received up to this point. Be sure to make copies (extra copies) because you may need them to send to other people. Save a couple copies for yourself. Start writing a log for all details. and harassing phone calls from collections.
Keep at it, don%26#039;t give up. It may pay off in the end.
Know this sounds overwhelming , but you already have a pretty good idea what you%26#039;re going to have to do. You may want to go to other agency%26#039;s that have there own programs, like DVR.
Keep on plugging away at this. I wish you the best.

DSS/Social Services?
To cut to the chase, write to your state representative or senator and tell them what happened. They can get things going faster than anyone else. Also, write to the credit bureau and let them know that you were given no notification that you were expected to pay for this nor did you knowingly agree to. Good luck.
