I am a full time college student and work 35-40 hours a week as a waitress. I make minimum wage plus tips. It just frustruated me whenever people don%26#039;t leave me any tip or like 5 %. That is such a waste of my time when I can serve other tables who give me 20% tips. What make it worse is that I work at a Japanese restaurant where the chef(the owner)take half of my tips and he also takes out the credit card transaction fees from my tip every night. I just absolutely hate when people coming in using their credit card and leave no tip. I don%26#039;t care if they are doing a take out, they should at least leave me something. It is like I am paying them to come in to get food and i have to take my time to serve them while i am paying for their credit card transaction fee by the end of the nights. and people dine at the sushi bar are so clueless that they don%26#039;t realised the chef takes tips too. they don%26#039;t tip because they think that i only brought them their drinks so i don%26#039;t deserve any tips.

I really hate it, too. I am in the same boat as you, full time college student and server. It%26#039;s hard to wait on people who don%26#039;t like the tipping system and they take it out on us, but what can we do? Blah blah we can always find another job, but how many other jobs offer the flexible hours restaurants do that are needed for us full time students? Not too many. I just look at it this way: this is just my job, not my career. I am taking away knowledge from this experience knowing what it%26#039;s like to work with the public will make me a more polite, appreciative person. People who don%26#039;t tip are jerks (unless they obviously got bad service than of course do not feel obligated to tip) but karma will come back to them.

Here in Australia, its not common %26amp; definatly not expected for anyone to tip. You get paid for the job you do %26amp; I pay for the food I eat %26amp; that is it. Ive only tipped once %26amp; that was for someone who did something for me that was not part of their job. I wont tip someone just for taking my order %26amp; bringing my plate to the table. Thats their job. The busineesn of tipping just seems to cause aggrovation %26amp; confusion over what acceptable %26amp; whats polite. I wouldnt want that everytime I went out for tea, which we can just afford now, let alone supplamenting your pay.

Mate, I feel for you. Australians are the worst tippers in the world (or so I am told), only because we have a culture of not tipping because we assume that people are being paid a good wage for the job they do. It sounds like your boss is a real greedy sucker to boot. Wouldn/t happen over here - all the staff would walk out. But I am aware that in America staff are treated like third rate citizens - hard to believe really considering how Bush is always saying how well he has done by the %26#039;majority%26#039; of workers in the country - though of course that doesn/t count EVERY state - but having said that, if your industrial relations laws were better or/at least had some foundation in a proper wage for the time and effort you put into your job, then things wouldn/t get to this. It%26#039;s too easy to say %26quot;get another job%26quot; - because even over here that is not the case - and though I sympathise with your plight - I also realise that if I had to tip everyone that I came into contact with in the hospitality industry I wouldn%26#039;t be able to afford it. I wish you well and hopefully by the end of your college years you will be able to tip the person at the other end of your night out - or even better - the wages will reflect the work and effort that is put into the job description! i tip on the service i get.........BUT I really hate the credit card thing, and in fact make a point of giving the server my tip NOT on the credit card, for just that reason [or in other places the server does not get the tip till it has cleared and in the restuarnat account, which can be a few days] so even if I pay using my card I will find the person and give her / him cash in their hand, the owner or what ever can suck up the charge not the poor sod running around doing all the work.

Hang in there, things will get better and to be honest, just do the job well and the tips should happen, like you said this is not a career path for you.

I don%26#039;t know where you work but I am almost certain that it is illegal for the credit card fee to be coming out of your tips.

And since you%26#039;re giving up half your tips to the owner . . . . I%26#039;ve never heard of a reputable businessman doing that. I%26#039;ve shared tips with runners, bussers, and the expediter (garnished plates on busy nights) but never for cooks or management.

However, I do feel that perhaps they don%26#039;t understand or care to understand the situation of their server. Or (like my grandparents) they think that tipping is a form of extortion.

I understand where you%26#039;re coming from. One of my grandmothers (not the one who doesn%26#039;t tip) and my mother worked as restaurant servers when they were younger. I%26#039;ve been taught to tip generously ever since I was a small child. And I never, ever write in a tip because most of the time, the server never sees that money. I don%26#039;t even leave it on the table--I hand it to the person and say, %26quot;Thank you for doing such a wonderful job!%26quot;

You should be getting paid overtime and the owner should not be digging into your tips for the credit card fees. Even if what he%26#039;s doing is legal, it%26#039;s very unethical.

However, I don%26#039;t think what he%26#039;s doing is legal. But I can%26#039;t say for sure; I%26#039;m not a lawyer. It certainly wouldn%26#039;t hurt to check with the Labor Board for your state.

Perhaps you should have a talk with him and be prepared to find another job. Let him find someone else put up with him and his stinginess.

I get annoyed at people who think you MUST tip and MUST tip 20% of MY hard earned pay to compensate for your crappy pay. The %26quot;tip or else we%26#039;ll doctor your food%26quot; people I get royally pissed at and they probably deserve the ZERO tips they get in the first place. It IS extortion. The US is the only place I know of that is arrogant enough to have waitresses expect/demand tips.

I understand, you depend on tips. I personally tip 20% depending on service.

I know MANY people in the waitressing position (and other tip dependent jobs) that feel the same way I do. They do not moan and whine about having to deal with a credit card transaction, nor do they cry about the crappy tip someone gave them. I dont hate them even though I do work on tips also, but for you who say well its your job or get a better job, thats why were in school and if everyone who worked in the service industry got a base pay it would raise the price of your services quite a bit then you would just complain about that. Imagine your 10 dollar meal goes up to 13-15 or so. My geuss is that you never worked a service industry job and someone paid your way through your rough times. Don%26#039;t you hate it when you get called to do an emergency surgery on someone with a life threatening problem and after it is all over and they are better and went home you find out they have no insurance and are not going to pay you?

Or they do have insurance and the insurance company says they are going to assign a payment, which is always less than what you billed, and they are only going to pay a percentage of the assigned amount and the patient stiffs you for the rest?

Getting %26quot;stiffed%26quot; is a common problem at both ends of the spectrum. My suggestion to you is to remember the repeat customers. If they tip well, make sure you go overboard the ext time they come in. if they tip poorly, make sure you do the absolute minimum for them the next time. The poor tippers will remember and go somewhere else. The good tippers will also remember and will come back more often. It will work out eventually that you have a regular client base that tips well.

I work in a job where tipping is a form of pay for me, I am not a waiter though. My job (waiters to) is to serve you and that is it. It is NOT our job to kiss your *** and make you feel important and superior. That is why I treat all my customers like crap after 6 months at the same job (11 months now into the job) I have never once asked for tip either, that%26#039;s a BIG no-no.

Also, for the the smart alec%26#039;s who say get a %26quot;better job%26quot; I am a college student who does not exactly have a wide array of job opportunities, so yeah some of us don%26#039;t have the same options available in life.

I am a former Food Service Manager, and there are times that I do not tip, but most of the time I tip quite well. The reason for me not to tip is if the service rates low. If your tips are not where you wnt them to be may I suggest you talk to one of your Management team and ask they for pointers that may improve your service skills. Also I noted that you are in a college town, that could be part of it. College students have little money and those that work in other jobs do not realize just how critical to YOU the tips are, and even if they did many of them are in the same boat as you trying to survive. From the comment that the owner takes half your tips it sounds like you might do well to find a different restaurant, you might also talk to someone in the legal profession, I think he may be breaking the law in doing that.

The poor attitude you show here obviously comes through loud and clear to the restaurant patrons you are serving. I wouldn%26#039;t tip someone that obviously has a sense of entitlement to tips as you do. Improve your attitude and the tips will start coming in.

Hate is a strong word for how I feel about people who don%26#039;t tip servers.

However, I believe strongly that servers should receive a fair tip that is based on the level of service they provide.

The things I take into consideration when I decide on my tip are:

If the restaurant is horribly busy and it just isn%26#039;t possible for the server to provide me with good service, I blame the restaurant and still tip the server if s/he is doing their best.

I do not penalize the server for the taste of the food or a delay in receiving my order.

Generally, my base point is 12%. I add on to that when the server has a pleasant attitude, seems geniuely interested in my needs, checks back with me one time to make sure I have everything I need and an additional plus if the server checks a second time to refill drinks etc.

If my order is wrong, that negatively effects my tip. I know the kitchen may have messed up the order but the server should check it before bringing it to me.

It negatively effects my order, If, when the server checks back with me, I ask for two things (i.e. cream for my coffee and extra napkins) and s/he returns with one item and I have to remember them and wait for the second item.

With all that said, it would take some really, really horrible service for me not to tip at least 12%.

it is legal for the owner to take a portion of your check. when I was a server a portion of my check went to the hostess and busser for their service. if I made below minimun wage the owner was to reimburse me to atleast match the minimum wage. it was horrible. people who have never worked in the industry do not understand how the whole tipping process works and it%26#039;s never polite to tell them so why not find a new job where you dont have to deal with the hassle of tipping?

Your employer is breaking the law by not paying you for every bit of time you are working. If you work 15 min. more, you are to be paid for that time. Go to the labor board. He should not take your money for the credit card fee either. And yes some people are cheap and don%26#039;t tip fairly or not at all. If you can afford to go out to eat, you can afford to tip. You need to change jobs. I%26#039;ve never heard of not getting paid overtime beyond your 8 hour shift. Taking the credit card fee from your tip seems like something the owner should not do unless it was a condition agreed upon your hire. And if the chef is the owner, generally the owner doesn%26#039;t not keep the tip. The owner makes his/her profit from the business. Bad practice by the owner of your restaurant. Not taking care of his employees well at all.

Tips are optional gratuities for exceptional service. You really can%26#039;t expect people to always tip you the way you want. If people think they ordered a drink and you brought it, you did your job that you get paid for.

Many people are terrible tippers. I was a waitress at one time, so I am sensitive to tipping and always try to be fair. Even if the bus-boy(don%26#039;t know if that%26#039;s the right term) is more attentive than the waiter/waitress, we%26#039;ll give the tip to him/her directly instead of leaving it for the waiter/waitress we saw twice the whole time. I%26#039;ll also leave no tip if the service was exceptionally bad. I won%26#039;t leave a bad tip because I don%26#039;t want the person to misunderstand - I%26#039;m not a bad tipper. I leave a good tip or on very, extremely rare occasions, no tip.

I%26#039;ve been embarrassed to be out to eat with people that are bad tippers. So I know there are many out there. People aren%26#039;t so generous with their money if it%26#039;s not a charge on the bill. Are you a good tipper? You work hard for your money. A customer walks in and buys food and pays the price that the restaurant is ASKING for...non-negotiable! Therefore, I pay for what i get, you get your money and the buck stops there. The SERVERS and waiters/waitresses are PAID to do THEIR JOB. It is IN THEIR JOB DESCRIPTION... IT IS what YOU%26quot;RE paid to do... if you got a problem with people not tipping, then there ARE PLENTY of minimum wage jobs out there...go work at WALMART then, then you can stop complaining!!! And finally, tipping isn%26#039;t even required...there is no sign posted saying all customers must tip... If that was the case, then it is understandable. But this is America.. it is everybody for themselves... I do agree it IS extortion... LEGALLY speaking, the customer at no time agreed to pay such fee prior to ordering the food... if a SIGN was posted, then that is understandable.

on a side note, I am in my early 20s...with an engineering job now. I had jobs at Panda Express and GNC when I was younger before i graduated college... all were paying $7-8. First of all...find another job. There are many waitress jobs out there and I don%26#039;t think what the owner does is fair. Obviously it is a business for them to make money and you are expendible. Sorry for being blunt, but it%26#039;s true and the owners know it.

As far as tips go, if I am a diner or a restaurant with full service, I base my tip on how efficient and nice my waiter/waitress is and how attentive. I know that isn%26#039;t easy to be too attentive when you are so busy with so many. I think it is unfair for me to get terrible service from one waitress and give her 15-20 per cent tip and give the same for a good waitress. I base my tip on my service and the attention and friendliness. My tip will reflect that. As far as credit cards go...this is a plastic society and they probably do have a charge to process the payment, but what is included in the entire amount should be shared by the workers.

I have been to buffets and Oriental restaurants where I get my own food and they bring the drinks and silverware only. I don%26#039;t place that service on the same level as full service. Personally, I resent that. I%26#039;d rather get my own drink and just pay the going price to dine there. The same buffet owned by other people never charged a tip..but we got everything for ourselves. Therefore I owe them nothing more.

At a full service dining place I pay the 15-20 % unless I have poor service. Then I pay less because why should a bad waitress get the same tip as a good one? One thing I do understand is that many times it isn%26#039;t the waitresses fault if the cook takes so long. I wouldn%26#039;t fault her or him for that. I wouldn%26#039;t want to be a waitress as it is hard work. I commend you for that! I also don%26#039;%26#039;t blame a waitress if the food is not good. That%26#039;s on the chef. I will tell the waitress about the food and they usually bring me somehting else or take it off the bill if I don%26#039;t have time to wait and the food is very bad. I also believe that a waitress should make more money...at least the minimum wage and the tip! That should be the law as your aren%26#039;t slave labor. Pick yourself up, hold your head up high, give them notice and quit. Either find a different line of work or find someone who is fairer. Good luck on your endeavours.
